Uterine Cancer
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently published data from their study, which included 33,497 U.S. women ages 35-74. The women were followed for almost 11 years, and during that time 378 uterine cancer cases were diagnosed.
The researchers found that women who had never used hair straighteners were at a 1.64 % risk of developing uterine cancer, while women who did were at double the risk. Moreover, black women were at 60 % higher risk of developing uterine cancer as straightener use was much more common among African American women.
Breast cancer
A study published by the NIH on December 4, 2019, in the International Journal of Cancer suggested that breast cancer risk increased with more frequent use of permanent hair dye and chemical hair straighteners.
Women who used hair-straightening products at least every five to eight weeks were about 30% more likely to develop breast cancer. While the association between straightener use and breast cancer was similar in African American and white women, straightener use was much more common among African American women overall.
L’OREAL SA HAS BEEN SUED BY A MISSOURI WOMAN
The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Chicago days after a study from the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Safety (NIEHS) found that hair-straightening products may significantly increase the risk of uterine cancer among frequent users.
UTERINE CANCER ACCOUNTS FOR ABOUT 3% OF ALL NEW CANCER CASES
Uterine cancer is the most common female reproductive system cancer, with 65,950 estimated new cases in 2022.
RESEARCHERS FOUND CHEMICAL EXPOSURE AS THE KEY FACTOR
Some common ingredients of hair straighteners such as parabens, bisphenol A, heavy metals, and formaldehyde may contribute to the elevated risk of uterine cancer.

Hair Straighteners and Cancer Lawsuits: Understanding the Legal Landscape
Hair straighteners and hair relaxers have long been popular cosmetic products used to achieve sleek and straight hair. However, recent legal developments have brought attention to potential health risks associated with these products, leading to a surge in lawsuits against prominent cosmetic companies. Notably, L’Oréal, a leading French cosmetic company, is facing litigation from several women who claim that the chemicals in their hair straightener products have led to serious medical conditions, including uterine cancer.
Allegations Against L’Oréal
Numerous lawsuits, initiated in October of the previous year, allege that L’Oréal’s hair straightener products contain unsafe components, increasing the risk of various medical conditions for the users. These legal actions follow a scientific study linking the chemicals in hair straighteners, specifically endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), to an elevated risk of uterine cancer.

Scientific Findings and Lawsuit Claims
A pivotal study released in October 2022 identified a correlation between the use of hair straighteners and an increased risk of uterine cancer. The study, spanning nearly 11 years with over 34,000 participants, linked endocrine-disrupting chemicals in hair straighteners to hormonal imbalances, resulting in various adverse health effects. This research has fueled claims against L’Oréal and other cosmetic companies, with plaintiffs asserting violations of state consumer fraud laws, failure to warn, design defects, and other legal claims.

The lawsuits underscore the potential health risks associated with widely used hair straightener products.
